This four track 3" CD opens with "Tes Lèvres, Un Abat-Son" - a gentle drifting piece of music with at least one finger in COCTEAU TWINS' pie, roving with beautiful grace throughout it's 4'40" distance. "Armide (Automne Mix)" is next - slightly shorter than the previous work. You really can see why they have the word 'Opera' in their name - musically it's a sort of Indie slow Rock/New Age/Folk music but the sound really defies description. The title track "Les Martyrs" is next, a faster piece sung in French by the male vocalist - the plucky bass gives it a feel like The Cure's "Primary" had, except this sounds a touch more lighter & happier than that. This CD finishes with "Gregoire", a change in direction again - and again sung in French. The synth below the rhythm & beat hits you suddenly. This is an odd mix of perky pop music & more moody, ethereal things - at times quite beautiful.
